Cheriyal Painting

Cheriyal Painting is a 400 year old art form which originated in the town Cheriyal located in present-day Telangana state. It mainly depicts stories of  Krishna Leela, Ramayana, Mahabharata, puranas and folk stories of the Gowda, Madiga and other local communities. It also includes everyday  scenes of a simple rural life.

Originally, Cheriyal paintings were made on khadi cotton cloth coated with a thick paste made of boiled rice starch, boiled tamarind seed paste, gum, white clay, and were painted using natural colors made from  natural colored stones. In present times, modern-day artists have started using acrylic colors to create this art form. Creating Cheriyal art takes hours due to the intricate details that are given to enhance the beauty of this art form.

During this Penkraft Online Cheriyal Painting course we start with the sketching and painting of basic elements from Cheriyal art such as trees, house, hut, borders, etc. For the beginners who are not fully confident of directly sketching on the surface, transferring the tracings provided with the course kit, on to the surface is then covered.
