Copperplate Calligraphy

Copperplate Calligraphy – Elegance in Every Stroke

Calligraphy is the art of writing letters with aesthetic precision, transforming words into visual poetry. Among the many calligraphic styles, Copperplate stands out for its elegance, fluidity, and classical charm.

Copperplate Calligraphy refers to a family of scripts—such as English Roundhand, Engrosser’s Script, and Engraver’s Script—that use shaded, cursive strokes created with a pointed nib. The term “Copperplate” originates from the Intaglio printmaking technique, in which engraved copper plates were used to reproduce writing samples in copybooks. These scripts became known for their graceful loops, consistent slants, and readability.

This style rose to prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries, gaining widespread popularity thanks in part to the influential work of George Bickham, whose renowned compilation The Universal Penman (1733–1741) showcased scripts from 25 master calligraphers. Originally written with thin-tipped feather pens, Copperplate evolved with industrialization, embracing flexible metal nibs that allowed greater control and durability.

Today, Copperplate is enjoying a resurgence in popularity—celebrated for its timeless beauty and meditative quality.
